Essential CS2 Smoke Lineups Every Player Should Know

Why Smoke Lineups Matter in CS2

Smokes are arguably the most important utility in Counter-Strike 2. A well-placed smoke can block sightlines, create safe passages, and execute bomb site takes. Unlike flashbangs or HE grenades, smokes directly control the map and force enemies to reposition or push through blind. Learning even a handful of essential smoke lineups will immediately improve your win rate.

How Smokes Work in CS2

CS2 introduced a revolutionary volumetric smoke system that replaces the old particle-based smokes from CS:GO. Key differences include:

  • Responsive smoke: Smokes react to bullets, explosions, and player movement
  • Consistent blooming: Smokes expand uniformly, making lineups more reliable
  • HE interaction: Grenades can temporarily clear holes in smoke clouds
  • Light interaction: Smokes interact with map lighting for more realistic visuals

Dust2 Essential Smokes

T-Side: Xbox Smoke (from T Spawn)

This is the single most important smoke in Dust2. It blocks the AWP angle from CT mid, allowing safe passage to lower tunnels or a mid-to-B split.

  1. Stand at the corner of T spawn near the left wall
  2. Aim at the top of the tall antenna on the building ahead
  3. Run forward and throw (left-click) when you reach the second line on the ground

T-Side: A Long Corner Smoke

Blocks the CT player holding from A site, allowing your team to push Long A safely.

  1. Stand at Long Doors
  2. Aim at the top-left corner of the building visible above the wall
  3. Jump-throw (jump + left-click simultaneously)

CT-Side: B Tunnels Smoke

Delays a B rush and forces Ts to wait or push through blind.

  1. Stand on the B site platform
  2. Aim directly at the tunnel entrance
  3. Simple overhand throw

Mirage Essential Smokes

T-Side: A Site Smokes (CT, Stairs, Jungle)

The classic Mirage A execute requires three smokes thrown simultaneously to block all CT positions:

CT Smoke: From T spawn, aim at the tip of the building above A site. Jump-throw to land it at CT spawn entrance.

Stairs Smoke: From the same area, adjust your aim to the right antenna. Running throw to block the stairs position.

Jungle Smoke: From T ramp, aim at the specific corner of the palace roof. Left-click throw to block jungle/connector.

CT-Side: Window Smoke (from Market)

Blocks the mid window sniper from spotting rotations through connector.

Inferno Essential Smokes

T-Side: Banana to B Site

CT Smoke: Block the CT rotation from standing behind the coffins. Thrown from bottom banana, aim at the church tower and jump-throw.

Site Smoke: Block the headshot angle from the elevated site position.

T-Side: A Site Execute

Arch Smoke: Prevents CT rotations from arch side. Thrown from A apartments.

Pit Smoke: Blocks the pit player from picking off your team crossing to site.

Tips for Learning Smoke Lineups

  1. Start with 3 smokes per map — Do not try to learn everything at once
  2. Use workshop maps — Search the Steam Workshop for lineup practice maps
  3. Practice in private servers — Use sv_cheats 1, sv_infinite_ammo 1, and sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1 to see trajectories
  4. Bind jump-throw — Create a jump-throw bind for consistent lineups: alias "+jumpthrow" "+jump;-attack" and alias "-jumpthrow" "-jump"
  5. Communicate with your team — Call out when you are throwing smokes so teammates know when to push

Conclusion

You do not need to memorize dozens of smoke lineups to be effective. Start with 2-3 essential smokes per map you play most, and gradually expand your repertoire. Consistent utility usage is what separates average players from good ones, and great smoke executes are often the difference between winning and losing rounds at every level of play.
