Inferno: The Utility King

Inferno is one of the most played maps in Counter-Strike history, known for its tight corridors, close-quarters combat, and heavy emphasis on utility usage. If you want to succeed on Inferno, you need to master your grenades. This guide covers everything from callouts to advanced strategies.

Map Layout

Inferno is a compact map with two bomb sites connected by a central area. The map is known for tight chokepoints, especially the infamous Banana corridor leading to B site.

  • A Site: Accessed through Apartments (Apps), Mid/Arch, or Boiler
  • B Site: Accessed through Banana, the narrow corridor from T side
  • Mid: Connects T side to both sites through Alt Mid and Arch

Essential Callouts

A Site Area

  • Apartments (Apps): Building complex on T approach to A
  • Balcony: The balcony overlooking A from Apps
  • Pit: The lowered area near A long
  • Graveyard: Behind A site near the church
  • Library: Small room adjacent to A site
  • Arch (Archway): CT rotation path to A site
  • Boiler: Room near Arch and Apps
  • Moto: Near the motorcycle on A approach
  • Truck: The truck on A site
  • Newbox / Default: Common plant spot on A site

  • Underpass: Below mid area, connects to B side
  • Mexico: Small alcove in mid area

T-Side Strategies

Banana Control

The T-side must fight for Banana control every round. Standard approach:

  1. Smoke off the CT Banana position
  2. Molotov Car to flush out anyone hiding behind it
  3. HE the smoke or push through with flashes
  4. Once you have Banana control, you can execute B or use it for map pressure

A Execute

  1. Take Apps control (clear Boiler and Balcony)
  2. Smoke Arch and CT positions
  3. Flash out of Apps for the site push
  4. One player pushes from Alt Mid/Arch for a split

B Execute

  1. Control Banana (smokes, molotovs, flashes)
  2. Smoke CT entrance to delay rotation
  3. Molotov Coffins and Dark to clear positions
  4. Flash in and overwhelm with numbers

CT-Side Setup

  • 2 players Banana/B: Contest Banana with utility, fall back when overwhelmed
  • 1 player Mid/Arch: Watch for mid aggression and support both sites
  • 2 players A/Apps: Hold Apps and A site positions

CT Banana Control

CTs must invest utility to contest Banana. A standard defense uses 2-3 smokes, a molotov, and HE grenades in the first 30 seconds. Key principle: delay, do not fight. Make the Ts spend their utility, then reposition.

Key Tips

  1. Utility is everything: Inferno uses more grenades per round than any other map
  2. Banana is the map: The team that controls Banana controls the round pace
  3. Apartments is underrated: Apps provides excellent flanking opportunities and A site pressure
  4. CT rotations are slow: It takes 15+ seconds to rotate from B to A, so commit early
  5. B retakes are hard: Once Ts are on B site with post-plant, it is very difficult to retake. Consider saving

Conclusion

Inferno rewards patience, utility mastery, and team coordination. Learn your Banana smokes and molotovs, practice Apps control, and communicate every piece of information. Inferno rounds are won and lost in the first 30 seconds of utility warfare. Master that phase, and you master the map.
